It ran surprisingly well, all graphic animations are smooth AFAICT. Just out of curiosity I updated an old iMac 24" 2008 with 4 GB RAM, directly from Snow Leopard to Mavericks ("in-place update"). I can run 10.9, but my machine's 4GB limit gives me pause, despite whatever memory compression scheme Mavericks uses. I might have to limit my surfing to a newer OSX, but I'll stay with SL as long as possible. I also have an older Mac Mini that dual boots 10.6.8 and 10.9.2, so I know whereof I speak when discussing the newer OS's. I do manage 3 other Macs, a MBP and Mac Mini with 10.8.5, which I dislike for the reasons stated. Again, maybe I could do the same thing (make 2 hour DVD's of community programs) with newer iMovies, but, again, why should I change my workflow?

I also use iMovie HD (iMovie 6 - yes, that old problem, and iDVD) for a project that I'm involved in every year. I'm pretty unhappy with the changes Apple has made in OSX. Now I don't dispute that I may be failing to adopt the new features, but why should I be required to change the way I use my computer? It's supposed to work for me, not me for it. Yes, they are there in the newer releases, but they are more difficult to use, and I use them heavily. Changing text from black on white to dark gray on light gray further aggravates the problem. By removing the color from finder icons they made them much harder to find in the tool bar.

I'm 73 years old and my eyesight is not what it used to be. I choose NOT to upgrade to 10.7/10.8/10.9 because Apple changed them for the worse in my opinion. I use 10.6.8 on my everyday 17" MBP with 8GB ram and a 2.66 Ghz i7. (And for that matter, one of our few for-parts broken ones also has a bad touchpad.) I've been told that those just have random hardware failures in general. I'm dealing with one that has a bad touchpad right now.

No, I don't think the video cards are the issue.

Heck, would it be crazy to install 32-bit Win7 on these macbooks (no dual-boot) rather than upgrade OS X, if only for the sake of support and decent performance without hardware upgrades? We have 2006 2GB RAM C2D machines running Windows 7 smoothly enough (and thus will be supported for quite a while). Is it the graphics cards that are failing? NVidia has a really bad batch of 9K graphics cards get out and they were installed in numerous things from Gateway to Toshiba.

At least with my computers, I can be sure that as long as Windows whatever has drivers for X piece of hardware, Windows whatever will run on the hardware. the whole 'planned obsolescence' of the Mac ecosystem burns me. And people wonder why I NEVER consider a Mac.
